Department careers page ↗Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) traces its roots to volunteer and county-employee crews who ran apparatus out of the Stillwell Yards in downtown Wichita to protect county bridges from grass fires before the district was officially formed. The district launched on January 1, 1955 following state approval, opening with four stations arranged around the cardinal points of Wichita. As the surrounding population grew, the department expanded through the 1970s with three more stations and by that decade had become Kansas's fourth-largest fire service; further stations were added in the 1980s to hold response distances to within five miles districtwide, and a station was built in Andale in 1998.
Today SCFD1 operates nine stations (numbered 31 through 39) staffed around the clock by full-time firefighter/EMTs, and it maintains automatic and mutual aid agreements to support neighboring communities. The district fields specialized Hazmat and Technical Rescue teams and is a member of Kansas Task Force 5, a federal urban search-and-rescue (USAR) resource.
MissionDedicated to creating safer communities through prevention, preparedness, and effective emergency response.
