About Ashland Fire Department

Ashland Fire Department has protected Kentucky's Boyd County seat along the Ohio River since 1885, when the city organized a hook-and-ladder company following a string of destructive downtown fires in the 1870s and 80s. The department turned fully paid before the turn of the century and has cycled through several eras of apparatus since -- from horse-drawn steamers to today's Sutphen pumpers and aerial towers -- while its firefighters have carried an IAFF Local 706 charter since 1941.

Today AFD is a full-time, career department of 56 employees split between fire suppression and fire prevention. Suppression crews work a three-platoon, 24-on/48-off schedule out of three houses -- Central Station on Carter Avenue, Station 2 on Winchester Avenue, and Station 3 on South 29th Street -- backed by a training center and drill tower on Front Street. Beyond structural firefighting, companies handle EMT first response, technical and water rescue, hazardous-materials mitigation, and one of the region's few staffed heavy-rescue units, while the prevention division runs inspections, plan review, and public-education programs across the city.

Hiring for AFD runs through the City of Ashland's central Human Resources office rather than a standalone fire recruitment page, so firefighter openings appear alongside other municipal postings whenever the department has vacancies to fill. New hires join a department built on nine core values it traces back to its founding: dedication, determination, courage, excellence, teamwork, pride, leadership, commitment, and honor.

MissionThe principles the Ashland Fire Department were founded upon and continue to strive to meet are dedication, determination, courage, excellence, teamwork, pride, leadership, commitment and honor.
