About Montgomery County Fire Protection District #1

Montgomery County Fire/EMS is a combination department, blending career firefighter/EMT and paramedic staff with volunteer members across seven stations covering approximately 200 square miles, including Mount Sterling, Camargo, and Jeffersonville. The department responds to roughly 6,500 calls a year, split between EMS and fire responses, and keeps three ambulances on duty daily (with three reserve units available) to backstop its integrated fire/EMS structure.

On the EMS side, the department delivers Advanced Life Support care under a medical director, with protocols that have grown to include direct transport to tertiary centers for cardiac, trauma, and neurological emergencies. The service traces its EMS roots to a funeral-home- and hospital-based ambulance operation in the 1970s that has since grown into a fully integrated ALS transport system alongside fire suppression.

Career hires come on as firefighter/EMTs (trained through the fire academy and EMT school, paid during training) or as already-certified paramedics in a non-firefighter role, with firefighter/EMT applicants needing a current CPAT card by their interview date. Career staff work a 48/96 schedule. The department also maintains an active volunteer program open to county residents, with its own written exam, physical agility test, and background investigation.
