About Mt Washington Fire Protection District

Mt. Washington Fire Protection District traces its origins to November 1940, when a house fire (the burning of McAbee Hall) exposed how slow outside mutual aid response could be, prompting locals to organize their own department in 1942. The district built its first station, a two-bay firehouse on Porter Street, in 1952 using donated land, labor, and materials, and became a formally taxing fire district in 1970 to put its finances on stable long-term footing.

As Mt. Washington and eastern Bullitt County grew, the district added Station 2 in 1982, Station 3 in 1987, and rebuilt Station 2 on Kings Church Road in 1998 after retiring the original Porter Street building in 1995. Today the district runs a combination department: a career, shift-staffed headquarters (Station 1) backed by three volunteer-staffed satellite stations.

The district operates a mixed fleet of engines, an aerial ladder truck, water tankers, and a forestry brush unit out of its four stations, reflecting a service area that spans both the built-up core of Mt. Washington and more rural, non-hydranted parts of Bullitt County.
