Department careers page ↗The Alexandria Fire Department traces its roots back more than a century and describes itself as having grown far beyond what its founding members could have imagined, with divisions covering Administration, Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, Communications, EMS, Training, Maintenance, and Records. The department runs six engine companies, two district chief cars, one ladder company, and one elevating aerial platform company, supported by a Fire Alarm and Dispatch center and a Fire Prevention Office handling inspection, investigation, and education. Fire suppression is staffed continuously by three rotating shifts.
Beyond firefighting, the department's Fire Prevention Bureau is organized into three divisions -- Inspections, Investigations, and Public Fire Safety Education -- with investigators who are P.O.S.T.-certified peace officers and who use tools including a certified K-9 and polygraph/voice-stress analysis in arson cases. The Public Fire Safety Education division runs school outreach (including a Fire Safety House during Fire Prevention Month) and a free smoke-detector and battery program for city residents.
New firefighters go through a 20-week Alexandria Fire Academy course combining classroom instruction and hands-on training, graduating with certifications in Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Firefighter I & II, and NREMT-Basic before rotating through stations citywide for roughly a year as a probationary firefighter.
