Department careers page ↗The Anne Arundel County Fire Department is an all-hazards public safety organization that responds to fires, medical emergencies, and a broad range of other emergencies while promoting fire prevention and enforcing fire code compliance throughout the county.
The department operates a large network of career and volunteer fire companies spread across Anne Arundel County, Maryland, from Galesville and Riva in the south to Severn and the Waugh Chapel area to the north. In April 2026 it opened the new Crownsville Fire Station 6, part of ongoing investment in community coverage.
Beyond emergency response, the department runs community risk-reduction efforts including CPR training and its Safety and Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program, and it publishes an annual report tracking community safety improvements.

Hiring runs through a structured, multi-phase process. Positions are posted on the department's site, and applicants complete a written examination, a panel oral interview, the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), a background investigation, and a medical examination before being appointed to the Fire Training Academy. CPAT certifications from other jurisdictions may be accepted, and a 12-week mentoring program and preparation resources are offered to help candidates pass the CPAT.
