About Cambridge Fire Department

The Cambridge Fire Department was established by the state legislature on March 17, 1832, beginning with six engines and one ladder truck. Today it describes itself as a 21st-century "All Hazards Department" operating out of eight fire houses strategically placed across the city.

The department is staffed by about 276 members (270 sworn, 6 civilian), organized into two fire suppression divisions and four staff divisions covering Administration, Fire Prevention, EMS, Special Operations & Safety, Training, and Technical Management.

Beyond structural firefighting, Cambridge fields advanced life support, heavy rescue, hazmat, and a broad technical-rescue program (high-angle, collapse, trench, confined space, and surface/underwater water and ice rescue), plus a Fire Investigation Unit.

The department is part of the Boston UASI region and the MetroFire mutual-aid network of 34 area cities and towns.

Mission"Protect the lives and property of the people of Cambridge from fires, natural and human-caused disasters, and hazardous materials incidents; to save lives by providing emergency medical services."
