About City Of Lowell Fire Department

The Lowell Fire Department (LFD) is a full-service, career fire department with 13 companies strategically located around the city. Beyond structural firefighting, LFD responds to emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, ice and water rescues/recoveries, motor vehicle accidents (including extrications), and technical and high-angle rescues. The Administration, Fire Prevention Bureau, Fire Investigation Unit, and Hazardous Materials Division work together as one team to educate the community and meet its needs.

Training and education are central to the department's mission. All members are trained to the EMS First Responder level, and the department maintains a comprehensive fire public-education program for elementary school students and senior citizens that has run since 1995. The Hazardous Materials Division trains all uniformed members as Hazardous Materials Operational Level Responders, with a large subset certified as Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Technicians through a 160-hour program.

The department's Fire Investigation Unit, based at JFK Central Fire Station, investigates the origin and cause of fires and explosions in the city under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, working closely with the State Fire Marshal's office and the Lowell Police Department.

MissionThe mission of the Lowell Fire Department is to improve the quality of life in the City of Lowell by providing fire protection, emergency response services, fire prevention, and activities with the public educational department. Our goal is to protect all citizens, their property and the environment from natural and man-made disasters. Our motto is Promoting Safety, Preventing Fires and Saving Lives.
