About City Of Quincy Fire Department

The Quincy Fire Department operates eight fire stations (Engine 1 through Engine 8) positioned throughout the city, from Quincy Avenue and Hancock Street to Sea Street and Doane Street. Department headquarters and the Fire Prevention Bureau are based out of the Public Safety Building at One Sea St, while recruit and in-service training is conducted at a Training Academy located at the Fore River shipyard site.

Beyond emergency response, the department's Fire Prevention Bureau enforces Massachusetts General Law Chapter 148 and the state fire and building codes, performing mandated inspections of schools, hospitals, hotels, day care centers, theaters, and nursing homes, running smoke-detector compliance programs for one- to five-family homes, issuing certificates of occupancy, and permitting flammable and fuel storage. The department also participates in the city's emergency management and fire-recovery efforts.

Leadership currently includes an interim fire chief and an operations deputy chief overseeing day-to-day suppression and EMS operations across the eight-station system.

How to get hired

Firefighter hiring in Quincy runs through the Massachusetts Civil Service system rather than a standard city job posting: candidates take the state-administered civil service examination and are hired off the resulting eligibility list. The City of Quincy's general Human Resources job postings page covers other municipal openings, but firefighter positions are filled via the civil service process described on the city's employment information page.
