Department careers page ↗Sandwich Fire Department has served the Town of Sandwich, Massachusetts since 1868, when residents petitioned for a formally appropriated fire department. The department professionalized over the following decades, appointing its first salaried chief in 1948 and organizing as it exists today in 1950, before moving into its first dedicated station in 1955.
Today the department operates around the clock from three stations, including the Forestdale station added in 1993 and the East Sandwich station, which now runs 24/7. Beyond fire suppression, crews handle emergency medical response, fire prevention and code enforcement, hazardous materials response, dive rescue and recovery, and CPR training for the community.
Under Chief John J. Burke, the department emphasizes community risk reduction, working education, enforcement, engineering, economic incentives, and emergency response together to keep Sandwich's roughly 20,750 residents and visitors safe across the town's 28 square miles.
