About Howell Area Fire Department

The Howell Area Fire Department protects the City of Howell and the surrounding townships of Howell, Cohoctah, Marion, and Oceola in Livingston County, Michigan. It operates out of four stations, with Station 20 on West Grand River Avenue serving as headquarters.

The department's history reaches back to 1874, when the Champion Fire Co. No. 1 was formed. In 2000 the city and neighboring townships combined resources to create the Howell Area Fire Authority, the entity that governs the department today.

In July 2023 the department shifted from a traditional volunteer/paid-on-call model to round-the-clock staffing at its main station, marking a significant step in its evolution toward continuous coverage.

Beyond fire suppression, the department maintains specialized capabilities including dive/water rescue, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue, and it runs an active community risk-reduction program covering smoke and CO detectors, child passenger safety seats, and public education.

MissionTo protect lives, health and property in the Howell Area Fire Department (HAFD) response area from the outcomes of fire, medical, structural and environmental emergencies through education, prevention, mitigation and control.
