About Lafayette Fire Department

Lafayette County Fire Department serves the largely rural county surrounding Oxford, Mississippi, covering about 650 square miles and a population near 40,000. Incorporated in 1977 as a nonprofit volunteer organization, it has grown from two charter engine companies into a countywide system of stations spread across communities like Harmontown, Yocona, Tula, Abbeville, Taylor, College Hill, and Paris.

The department is a combination agency, staffed by a mix of full-time shift personnel, part-time members, and paid-per-call responders led by a small command staff. Beyond fire suppression, it provides emergency medical services, search and rescue, rope rescue, and special operations.

Call volume has climbed steadily, from roughly 1,100 calls in 2020 to more than 2,800 in 2024, reflecting the growth of the Oxford area and the county it protects.

MissionAcquire and maintain all types of property which may be used in the prevention and fighting of fires and promote and foster better fire prevention and fire safety among its members and the citizens of Lafayette County.
