Department careers page ↗Gravois Fire Protection District traces its roots to the volunteer Twin Bays Fire Department, founded by Jay Flenner and Larry Whittman, which grew through the VFW Fire Department and the Gravois Volunteer Fire Department (1970) before being organized as the Gravois Fire Protection District in 1992. The department's first station operated out of the basement of a local supermarket in Gravois Mills before the district built out its permanent network of firehouses.
Today the district covers 150 square miles and 63 miles of Lake of the Ozarks shoreline across Morgan and Camden counties, serving a year-round population of about 9,100 that swells past 100,000 on peak weekends between March and November. A three-member elected board of directors governs the district, which operates seven firehouses plus a dedicated training and maintenance facility.
The district runs a combination staffing model: a paid Fire Chief, a Deputy Chief, a Deputy Chief of Training, and career firefighters staffing two stations 24/7/365, supplemented by volunteer firefighters, junior firefighters, and support personnel. Its fleet includes pumpers, ladder/quint trucks, tankers, brush units, heavy rescues, boats, and a communications bus, reflecting the district's mix of structural, wildland, and lake-water response demands. The department's ISO Public Protection Classification improved from a 10 to a 9 and eventually to a 7 by 2007, and annual call volume has grown from fewer than 100 calls in its early years to more than 1,200 today.
