High Ridge Fire Protection District serves a largely suburban and rural stretch of northeast Jefferson County, about 30 miles southwest of St. Louis, out of four stations located in High Ridge, Murphy, Byrnes Mill, and House Springs. The district's headquarters station, built in 2001, also houses district administration, the Fire Marshal's office, and a maintenance facility, while the other three stations range from a 1979-built (and 2004-renovated) house in Murphy to newer facilities built in 2002 and 2009.
The department fields 30 full-time and 20 part-time firefighters, all trained to at least EMT level with a growing number of paramedics, responding to roughly 2,500 calls a year. Beyond structural and wildland/brush fire response, the district maintains water rescue boats and runs an active community-education program that includes CPR classes, Project Lifesaver equipment for locating at-risk residents, car-seat safety checks, and smoke-detector installations, often using the mascot "First Alarm Joe" to reach kids on pool and fireworks safety.
The Fire Marshal's office also handles fire-code enforcement for the district, running commercial occupancy and multi-family inspections, issuing building permits for new commercial construction, and administering local burning regulations that follow Missouri Department of Natural Resources rules for open burning outside incorporated areas.
When is a commercial occupancy inspection required?
A commercial occupancy inspection is required for any new business, or any existing business that is changing location or transferring ownership.
Does High Ridge Fire Protection District issue open burning permits?
No. The district follows open burning regulations adopted from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources rather than issuing its own permits, and burning is prohibited entirely within incorporated municipalities such as Byrnes Mill.
When can trees and brush be burned?
Burning of allowed materials is permitted only outside incorporated municipalities, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., between September 16 and April 14, weather permitting, and residents should call the district beforehand to confirm conditions.
How much does a fire report request cost?
There is a $10.00 fee per report, plus an additional $3.00 processing fee if paying by credit card; requests typically take about 48 hours to process.
