About North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District has served the Incline Village and Crystal Bay communities on the north shore of Lake Tahoe since 1959, when Washoe County Commissioners formed the district under Nevada law. What began as a volunteer operation covering just the Crystal Bay lakeshore grew through annexation up the Mt. Rose Highway corridor, transitioning to a career department and building its own paramedic ambulance program in the early 1980s after private ambulance service pulled out of the area.

Today the district runs paramedic engines and ambulances out of four stations, backed by a heavy rescue squad carrying most of the department's technical rescue equipment and dedicated hand crews for wildland fuels reduction and defensible-space work. Decades of investment in fire prevention, water rescue capability, and wildland-urban interface mitigation culminated in the district earning the highest possible ISO Public Protection Classification, Class 1, in 2018.

NLTFPD's fuels management program has expanded significantly, growing from a handful of personnel to 65 by 2022 as the district leans further into defensible space and prescribed burn work across the Tahoe Basin's forested terrain.

MissionEstablished a reputation for excellence in the prevention of, preparation for, and response to emergencies.
