Department careers page ↗Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue (TMFR), the operating arm of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, serves the unincorporated communities around Reno, Nevada. Established in 1972 and returned to independent status in 2012, it grew from a volunteer-based organization into a fully professional department.
The district runs 11 career fire stations reaching from Cold Springs in the north to Washoe Valley in the south, Verdi/Mogul in the west, and Hidden Valley in the east. It serves more than 100,000 residents across a large service area on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Beyond fire suppression, crews handle advanced life support, hazardous materials, technical rescue, water-entry operations, and wildland fuels management, reflecting the range of environments they cover across Northern Nevada.
MissionCommitted to excellence, service, and the protection of life and property in our community.
TMFR hires firefighters through a structured, testing-based process. Candidates need a current CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) and must register for the required exam through Public Safety Answers, after which applications are accepted for a minimum 21-day window with required certifications and a short interview video uploaded.
Applications and testing are encouraged even between active openings so candidates can complete the exam portion before positions post. Firefighter recruitment is managed through the district's NEOGOV careers portal, and applicants may also be directed to register with the National Testing Network.
