Department careers page ↗Manchester Fire traces its organized beginnings to October 26, 1839, when city voters adopted the town's first fire protection measures, appointed eleven Firewards, and bought a hand tub engine for a station on Vine Street. The department grew through the era of horse-drawn steamers and volunteer hose companies into the modern career force that protects the Queen City today, and Local 856 was organized along the way as the firefighters' union.
Today the department operates out of 10 fire stations spread across Manchester's west side, south end, north end, and northeast district, each running an engine company built around a 2000-gallon-per-minute pumper. Several stations also host specialized apparatus: a Hazardous Materials Response Unit and Coordinated Incident Management trailer at Station 8, a Building Collapse Unit at Station 7, a Logistical Support Unit at Station 5, and a Mask Service Unit (breathing-air refill) based at Station 10.
The department is organized into Administration, Communications, Fire Prevention, Operations, and Training divisions, and states it is committed to maintaining an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class II rating for the city, backed by aggressive code enforcement, fire prevention education, and cause-and-origin investigation of incidents.
