Jackson Fire District No. 3 covers the northeastern portion of Jackson Township, one of three independent fire districts within the township, governed by a five-member elected Board of Fire Commissioners that meets monthly. The district operates as a combination department, pairing career firefighters based out of the Johnson Park Fire Station with volunteer members, and also contracts with the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 (Station 55) to help cover the district.
Career staffing runs four platoons on a 24-hours-on, 72-hours-off schedule, and every career firefighter is a certified EMT trained in CPR and AED use. The department has cross-trained its firefighters as first responders since the early 1990s, reflecting a long-standing commitment to combined fire and EMS response for the roughly 60,700 residents (2024 Census estimate) living within its coverage area.
Beyond emergency response, the district's Fire Bureau enforces the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, conducts business and home-resale inspections, investigates fires, reviews construction plans, and runs school-based fire safety education, including a fire safety trailer visit for third and fourth graders each spring and a poster contest for fifth graders during Fire Prevention Week.
