Department careers page ↗The Belen Fire Department has served the community since June 13, 1921, when it began as an all-volunteer operation. Today it operates as a combination department, pairing career staff with volunteer firefighters to protect roughly 7,500 residents across the department's 8-square-mile district in Valencia County, New Mexico.
Recruits who join the department attend an in-house fire academy each fall, working toward IFSAC Firefighter 1 and 2 certification under the department's own instructors at its station on 5th Street. The department frames its work around service to the Belen community, backing up its emergency response with fire-safety education and fire marshal inspections for local businesses and residents.
