Department careers page ↗Santa Fe County Fire Department was formed in 1997 through the consolidation of 15 independent volunteer fire districts and the former Office of the County Fire Marshal into a single, unified county agency. Today it operates as a combination department, pairing career firefighters with roughly 150 volunteer members who respond to fire, rescue, and emergency medical calls around the clock, every day of the year.
The department is organized into 14 volunteer fire districts: Agua Fria, Chimayo, Edgewood, El Dorado, Galisteo, Glorieta Pass, Hondo, La Cienega, La Puebla, Madrid, Pojoaque, Stanley, Tesuque, and Turquoise Trail. The oldest of these, Pojoaque, was established in 1959, decades before the districts were brought under one county administration. This district structure lets the department keep locally rooted crews and stations while coordinating training, apparatus, and command through a central headquarters.
Spread across roughly 1,900 square miles of unincorporated Santa Fe County plus the incorporated Town of Edgewood, the department serves about 70,000 residents and also provides emergency services to the Pueblos of Nambe, Pojoaque, Tesuque, and San Ildefonso. Coverage is anchored by a network of regional fire stations that are staffed 24 hours a day alongside the many volunteer district stations.
Career firefighter and staff positions are posted through Santa Fe County's human resources job portal, while district member (volunteer) opportunities are open through the department's volunteer fire districts.
