About Bald Head Island Fire-Rescue

Bald Head Island Fire-Rescue operates as part of the Village's combined Public Safety department, protecting a small barrier island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River accessible only by passenger ferry. Because of the island's isolation, the department fields cross-trained Public Safety Officers who deliver law enforcement, fire suppression, emergency medical care, and water/beach rescue rather than staffing separate divisions.

Coverage runs around the clock, organized into four shifts, each led by a lieutenant, with three to six officers on duty at all times and supported by volunteers.

The department's fleet reflects the island's unique geography: fire engines, ambulances (including a mini-ambulance for narrow lanes), quick-response vehicles, and a water-rescue package of jet skis, a Zodiac, and a Jon boat, plus ATV/UTV units for beach rescue.

Mission"Ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents, employees, and visitors to the island, as well as the security and safety of the properties on the island."
