Burgaw Fire Department protects the Town of Burgaw (about 5 square miles) and the larger Pender Central Fire District covering roughly 167 square miles from a single station on North Walker Street.
The department operates as a combination agency: a small career core of a fire chief, a fire marshal, and three firefighter/apparatus operators is supported by up to 12 part-time members and up to 40 volunteers. Its apparatus fleet includes an aerial, two engines, two tenders, and a brush truck.
The department frames its work around a set of stated core values including accountability, commitment, courage, honesty, integrity, leadership, professionalism, and teamwork, and emphasizes that membership involves many roles beyond fire suppression.

Burgaw FD recruits volunteer and part-time members on an ongoing basis and periodically posts paid full-time openings. Prospective members must be at least 18 (a Junior Firefighter Program is available for ages 16-18) and apply by completing the Town of Burgaw Employment Application and submitting it to the fire department.
