About Fuquay-Varina Fire Department

Fuquay-Varina Fire Department traces its roots to 1925, when W. Lee Rowland became the town's first fire chief. A separate rural volunteer department, organized in 1954 by the local Farm Bureau, built its own two-bay station in 1965 before the two outfits merged in 1972 under Chief Wayne Wortham. The combined department moved into its current South Fuquay Avenue headquarters in 1978 and marked its 100th anniversary in the fall of 2025.

Today the department is a combination career/volunteer operation of about 82 personnel -- including 69 career staff, 7 full-time administrators, 5 fire-prevention specialists, one part-time firefighter, and four volunteers -- led by Chief Jim Jones. Crews work out of four stations, the newest of which opened on Wade Nash Road in 2024, running a fleet of engines, ladder trucks, a rescue truck, tankers, and a brush truck to cover a fast-growing 71.5-square-mile jurisdiction of more than 80,000 residents in southern Wake County, about 15 miles from Raleigh.

Beyond structural firefighting, the department handles rescue and extrication calls, water rescue, and medical emergencies as EMT-certified first responders working alongside Wake County EMS. Its Office of the Fire Marshal runs fire-prevention and public-education programs, including station tours, smoke-detector assistance, and car-seat inspections, reflecting the department's dual role as an emergency responder and community-safety resource for one of Wake County's fastest-growing towns.
