About North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.

North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department has protected the northeastern corner of Chatham County and a sliver of southern Orange County since 1968, growing from a rural volunteer outfit into a combination department with 67 career staff and 9 volunteer firefighters working three shifts out of seven stations. The department describes itself as one of the largest, if not the largest, rural fire departments in North Carolina, and says the past 15 years have brought rapid growth as the district shifts from rural to urban development.

Crews respond to roughly 2,500 calls a year, ranging from structure and woods fires to vehicle accidents, EMS calls, land search and recovery, swift-water and dive rescue, and rope rescue. The department's push to modernize its fleet and training paid off with a district-wide upgrade to an ISO Class 3 rating effective January 1, 2025 (up from Class 4), a result leadership credits to career staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors working alongside automatic-aid partner departments.
