Department careers page ↗Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire & Rescue traces its roots to 1969, when local residents formed the Sherrills Ford Volunteer Fire Department after recognizing the community had no dedicated fire protection. Volunteers built the first station themselves in 1972, securing donated materials and labor. In 1998 the department merged with the Sherrills Ford Rescue Squad, forming the combined career-and-volunteer organization that exists today.
The department now covers a 32.64-square-mile fire district in Catawba County that includes 36 linear miles of Lake Norman shoreline, protecting more than 10,500 residents. A combination staff of 22 full-time, 20 part-time, and 14 volunteer firefighter/EMTs runs a fleet that includes five engines, a tower ladder, a heavy rescue truck, and a 28-foot fire boat, answering more than 1,200 emergency calls a year from a main station and two substations. The department holds a Class 3 NCRRS rating, placing it among roughly 200 fire departments statewide at that level.
Beyond structural firefighting and EMS first response, SFTFR trains for heavy rescue, high-angle rescue, agriculture rescue, and water rescue and recovery on Lake Norman, and runs public fire and life-safety education programs. The department describes its culture around three values -- Pride, Honor, and Integrity -- reflecting both the tradition of the fire service and the sacrifice it can demand.
Missionpreserve life and property through public education and prompt, effective emergency response
SFTFR hires career Firefighter/EMTs to staff its combination department alongside part-time and volunteer members, and periodically opens volunteer positions through its Junior Firefighter and recruitment programs. Career openings are posted on the department's Career Opportunities page when available.
