About Williston Fire Department

Williston Fire Department (WFD) is a combination department serving the City of Williston, North Dakota and the surrounding region. Organized in 1889, it provides both fire suppression and advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical services, covering a large territory of about 1,100 square miles from four fire stations staffed around the clock.

The department is approved for up to 81 full-time career personnel, supplemented by 30 paid-on-call members and 7 part-time members, reflecting the combination model that pairs a full-time career core with volunteer and part-time support.

Career firefighters work a 48-hours-on / 96-hours-off schedule out of the four stations. As an ALS transport agency, WFD cross-trains its firefighters as EMTs and paramedics, and its in-house academy also prepares recruits for airport firefighting and hazmat response.

How to get hired

Williston Fire Department hires Firefighter/EMTs, Firefighter/Paramedics, Fire Inspectors, and experienced lateral candidates through the City of Williston's online application portal on GovernmentJobs. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are contacted by Human Resources to schedule an oral interview held at one of the four fire stations before a panel of administrative chief staff and HR.

Selected candidates clear a background investigation, receive a conditional offer approved by the Fire Chief and city officials, and complete a drug screen and physical agility test before starting. New recruits enter a roughly one-year in-house academy; laterals complete a shorter field-training period.
