About Ardmore Fire Department

Ardmore Fire Department traces its roots to April 19, 1895, when a fire that started in the Harper and Cecil Livery stable on North Caddo swept through and nearly destroyed the young city of Ardmore. In the aftermath, the department was organized as a 25-member volunteer fire department, outfitted with the city's first horse-drawn steam pumper engine, purchased for $1,800. A second turning point came in 1915, when an exploding railroad tank car of casing-head gas leveled much of downtown Ardmore, spurring the department's growth into the modern career agency it is today.

Ardmore Fire Department is now a career department of 33 firefighters and one administrative secretary, operating out of 3 fire stations that cover a 56-square-mile response area around the clock, 365 days a year. Firefighters work three shifts on a 24-hours-on, 48-hours-off schedule. The department's Fire Suppression Branch responds to structural and wildland fires, provides fire-based EMS response, handles vehicle extrication and mechanical rescue, and manages limited hazardous-materials response and company fire inspections, while the Fire Marshall Branch conducts life-safety inspections, reviews plans for new construction, investigates arson, issues burn and fireworks permits, and leads community fire-safety education.
