Department careers page ↗Hempfield Fire Department coordinates fire protection across Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, PA, through a network of ten volunteer fire stations combining chartered and non-chartered companies with supplemental paid and administrative support. The department is led by a Fire Chief who also serves as the township's Director of Emergency Services, supported by two deputy chiefs, and works alongside the township's Fire Prevention, Fire Safety, and Emergency Management Agency (HEMA) divisions.
Member companies include the Grapeville, Midway/St. Clair, North Hempfield, Adamsburg, Bovard, Carbon, Hannastown, Hempfield #2, West Point, and Fort Allen volunteer fire departments, each maintaining its own station and apparatus while operating under unified township fire-service policies governing membership, training, and span of control. The township is also planning a new station (designated Station 502) in western Hempfield to close a coverage gap, funded in part by a 2022 general-obligation bond and sited on a parcel the Board of Supervisors approved for purchase in late 2025.
Emergency medical transport is handled by a separate, independently accredited provider, Mutual Aid Ambulance Service, while HFD's member companies focus on fire suppression, prevention, and life-safety response. Because the department relies entirely on volunteer staffing, the township provides free training and equipment to new recruits and has introduced a SAFER stipend program to help sustain member companies.
