Department careers page ↗York Area United Fire and Rescue was formed in 2008 as Pennsylvania's first Regional Combination Fire Department, created through the merger of the Spring Garden Township and Springettsbury Township fire departments after an ad-hoc committee process that began in 2004 and a charter signed in September 2007. The department now serves a combined population of roughly 57,000 residents across about 39.4 square miles spanning Spring Garden, Springettsbury, and Manchester townships in York County.
YAUFR operates as a blended career and volunteer agency out of four stations, running a fleet that includes multiple engines, two trucks, and a rescue unit. Beyond emergency response, the department runs a public education program that includes school presentations, a Citizens Fire Academy, youth safety camps, free smoke alarm distribution, and fire extinguisher training.
In March 2026 the department earned International Accredited Agency status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), reflecting a stated commitment to professionalism, training, and continuous improvement toward what it describes as its vision of being a model, world-class fire department.
MissionTo serve the community by providing the highest level of comprehensive and timely emergency services.
YAUFR hires for Full-Time Firefighter/EMT and Part-Time Firefighter/EMT positions, and separately accepts volunteer applications on a continuous basis. As of this profile, the department's most recent full-time/part-time hiring cycle is closed, though volunteer applications remain open year-round.

Why does a fire truck come for ambulance calls?
EMT-staffed engines assist when the primary ambulance is unavailable or to address urgent situations.

Applications can be picked up at Station 891, 50 Commons Drive, York, PA 17402.
What should I do when an emergency vehicle with lights and siren approaches?
Reduce your speed, pull over to the right as far as safely possible, and come to a complete stop to let it pass.
