Department careers page ↗Burton Fire District was created through South Carolina state legislation in 1973 and marked its 50th anniversary on February 15, 2023. The district protects the unincorporated communities of Port Royal Island in Beaufort County, bordering Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the City of Beaufort, and the Town of Port Royal.
The district operates five fire stations across its service area (Burton Hill, Grays Hill, Shell Point, Pinewood, and Habersham) and runs on a 48/96 shift schedule adopted in 2006. Personnel are trained to NFPA standards, and the district functions as an ALS, non-transporting EMS agency licensed by the state of South Carolina, holding an ISO rating of 2/2Y.
Burton Fire District maintains an on-site live-burn and training facility for firefighter certification and skills maintenance, and its stated purpose is to provide the highest level of service and safety to the citizens and visitors of the district.
