Department careers page ↗Canebrake Fire Department was formed in the early 1980s when the rural communities of Fairview, Fork Shoals, and Hillside, South Carolina found themselves without fire protection, caught between the coverage areas of neighboring departments. After annexation attempts with other departments failed, area residents chartered their own fire district. The A.O. Neves family donated the land at the corner of Hillside Church Road and McKelvey Road for a headquarters station, built in 1985 and still known as "Neves Station." The department takes its name from the Battle of Canebrake, a Revolutionary War engagement fought on South Harrison Bridge Road in the upper part of the district.
Today Canebrake is a combination department serving lower Greenville County out of one staffed station on Fairview Road plus three additional station facilities. The department is DHEC BLS certified, holds an ISO Class 3 rating, and responds to roughly 400 calls a year. It is governed by an elected board of fire commissioners and continues to rely on a mix of full-time staff and part-time/volunteer members to keep the district covered.
Canebrake Fire Department accepts applications from candidates interested in joining its combination career/volunteer roster. Completed applications are submitted by email to the fire chief or dropped off in person at department headquarters.
