About Darlington County Fire District

Darlington County Fire District was created in 1987 by the Darlington County Council to replace the patchwork of independent rural volunteer companies that had left much of the county with inadequate fire protection. It began with ten stations built around existing volunteers and a fleet of new E-One engines, and has grown into a countywide combination department.

Today the District covers more than 500 square miles of both rural and urban Darlington County, including the historic towns of Society Hill and Lamar. It operates 11 fire stations plus 5 sub-stations and maintains a fleet of more than 40 pieces of apparatus.

Staffing blends career and volunteer members: a daytime administrative and command staff (fire chief, deputy fire chief, fire marshal, and office manager) supported on shift by captains, lieutenants, and firefighters working 24-hour rotations, alongside more than 110 volunteer firefighters.

Beyond structural and rural firefighting, the District fields a Specialized Emergency Response Team trained for high/low-angle, confined-space, and trench rescue, as well as a Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Mission"To provide the best lifesaving service to the citizens, visitor and tourist of Darlington County."

How to get hired

The District's website is oriented toward its "Become a member" volunteer path rather than a formal recruitment portal, and it does not publish a step-by-step hiring process, requirements, salary, or benefits. Prospective career and volunteer members are best served by contacting the District office directly.

Members train through the South Carolina Fire Academy, whose portal the District links from its site. To ask about current openings or volunteer opportunities, reach the District at 843-339-9098 or Darcofire@darcosc.net, or visit the main station at 137 North Center Road, Hartsville.
