Department careers page ↗Glassy Mountain Fire Department was formed in January 1988 when Greenville County Council established the Glassy Mountain Fire/Safety District, following community organizing that began in 1987 under founders Press Jones, Cecil Pruitt, and Arnold Emery. The department opened its first three stations that April and has since grown to five stations, three of which provide round-the-clock coverage, including a station added in 1997 within the Cliffs at Glassy community and a fifth built in 2006 at Beaver Dam.
The department has steadily expanded its service model beyond fire suppression: it became an EMS first-response agency in 2013, added Advanced Life Support-Paramedic capability in 2017 and a second ALS-Paramedic unit in 2019. Its ISO Public Protection Classification has improved over time, reaching Class 4 in 2014 and Class 3 in 2021, reflecting investment in staffing, apparatus, and water supply. Today the department operates with about 60 personnel and answers more than 700 calls a year.
Leadership has been stable across long tenures, with Chief Robert Staples at the helm since December 2013 after chiefs Cecil Pruitt, Carlton Hood, Paul Bishop, Ben Graydon, and Bryan Riebe. The department pairs its emergency response mission with community programs, including a Community Risk Reduction effort and a physician medical director supporting EMS protocols and staff training.
