Greenville City Fire Department

Greenville City Fire Department traces its roots back to a volunteer firefighting force founded in 1840, and has since grown into a full-time career department serving the city under Fire Chief Brian Horton. The department runs seven fire stations (Station 1 through Station 7) staffed by roughly 159 full-time sworn and civilian personnel, covering an estimated 72,000 residents across about 30 square miles that include several interstate and US highway corridors running through the city.

GCFD's mission spans fire suppression, emergency medical first response, hazardous materials mitigation, technical and water rescue, and fire prevention and investigation, backed by an active life-safety education program (station tours, smoke alarm installs, CPR/AED and fire extinguisher training, and a citizens academy). The department is notable for holding both a Class 1 ISO Public Protection Classification -- the highest rating available -- and international accreditation through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), placing it among a small group of agencies nationally that hold both distinctions.

GCFD hires through periodic recruitment cycles rather than a continuously open posting -- candidates can sign up on the department's Recruitment Hub to be notified of upcoming cycles. There are multiple entry points depending on experience: a non-certified entry-level Firefighter track for candidates with no prior firefighting background, a Firefighter Recruit track for those already holding IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter II certification, and lateral tracks (Firefighter II and Firefighter III) for certified firefighters with verifiable prior experience, including from outside agencies.
