About Midway Fire Rescue Department

Midway Fire Rescue traces its roots to December 11, 1961, when it was formed as an all-volunteer department serving the Waccamaw Neck region, including Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Prince George, and DeBordieu Colony. The department stayed volunteer-based until 1978, when Chief Mike Mock took over leadership, and by 1986 Mock had hired the department's first three career firefighters working 24-hour shifts. Over the following decade, Midway built three new fire stations and grew its shift staffing to support two firefighters at each station.

Today Midway Fire Rescue covers roughly 72 square miles stretching from Highway 17 north of Brookgreen Gardens south to the Georgetown city limits, spanning both Winyah Bay bridges, Brookgreen Gardens, and Huntington Beach State Park. In 2008 the department formally took on expanded responsibilities beyond fire suppression, including emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, confined space and rope rescue, and water rescue in both the ocean and the intracoastal waterway. Shift staffing rose from 19 to 20 personnel in 2024 to keep pace with the area's growing permanent population and seasonal tourist traffic.

MissionMidway Fire Rescue aims to deliver high-quality emergency and non-emergency services through rapid intervention, public education, code enforcement, and maintaining professional standards.
