About York County Department Of Fire Safety

York County Department of Fire Safety operates out of a dedicated complex on McFarland Road in the city of York, supporting a countywide fire service made up of 18 separate departments -- from fully volunteer rural districts to the career operations in Rock Hill and Fort Mill. Rather than running its own engine companies countywide, the department's role is largely one of standards, support, and specialized response: its Technicians Division, established in 1999, was created specifically to help the county's volunteer departments meet ISO and OSHA compliance requirements.

Day to day, the department's Fire Inspections and Investigations staff conduct semi-annual fire and life-safety inspections of businesses in unincorporated York County, review plans for new commercial construction, and investigate fire origin and cause alongside law enforcement, including arson cases referred through the Sheriff's Office and Crime Stoppers. Its Technicians handle annual hydrant flow testing and preventive maintenance across the unincorporated county, plus yearly SCBA testing and firefighter fit-testing to OSHA standard. A County-run Shop builds, repairs, and fabricates apparatus for county-owned fire units, and a Hazardous Materials Team, backed by a dedicated hazmat truck, responds to chemical and haz-mat incidents countywide.

The department also runs its own McFarland Road training facility, which hosts local fire and rescue training as well as courses from the South Carolina Fire Academy -- the Academy's Region 2 office is co-located there. A small in-house Suppression division, organized as three two-person Firefighter II/EMT teams, gives the department its own direct-response capability alongside the training, prevention, and support functions it provides to the rest of York County's fire departments.
