About Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department

Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated in April 1970 by a group of local community leaders — Richard Jackson, T.R. Drake, Don Nicholson, Hillard Heartman, Harry Murphy, Pete Barnes, Larry Lee, Bob Justice, and Lauren Hunt — to organize a fire department for the Pleasant View area and promote fire safety education.

More than fifty years later, PVVFD operates eight stations spread across an approximately 280-square-mile district, staffed by around 50 volunteer firefighters and medical responders under Fire Chief P.J. Duncan. The department holds a Class 5 Public Protection Classification (ISO) rating and answered 2,764 calls in 2025. Alongside emergency response, the department runs community fire-safety programs including free smoke alarm installation, car seat installation checks, and 911 address marker signs.

The department is in an active, multi-year recruitment drive, with Chief Duncan stating a goal of adding 100 additional volunteers over three years. Entry points include no-experience-necessary volunteer firefighter roles, volunteer medical responder positions for TN-licensed EMRs, non-operational support member roles, and occasional part-time, shift-based paid firefighter openings for FF1/FF2-certified applicants.

How to get hired

PVVFD recruits year-round for several volunteer roles and, less often, for capped part-time paid firefighter shifts. Volunteer Firefighter, Volunteer Medical Responder, and Support Member positions were listed as open at time of review; the Part-Time Firefighter position was listed closed.
