Department careers page ↗Bastrop County ESD No. 2 was established in 2008 to provide improved fire, rescue, and emergency assistance to residents of the district, which is funded by property tax and staffed by a mix of career and volunteer firefighters. The City of Bastrop itself opted out of the district's creation and is not part of it, even though it is surrounded by ESD No. 2 territory. In 2013, voters approved annexing the former Paige Volunteer Fire Department's coverage area, adding about 80 square miles to the original 120-square-mile district and bringing the former Paige VFD facility into the department as Station 5.
The district is governed by a five-member Board of Emergency Services District Commissioners appointed by the Bastrop County Commissioners Court, with day-to-day operations led by a fire chief and battalion chiefs assigned to A, B, and C shifts. Operations run out of four stations, two of which (Station 2 and Station 4) run 24/7 with a blend of full-time paid staff and volunteers, while Stations 3 and 5 are volunteer-staffed. The department's apparatus fleet includes engines, tenders, brush trucks, UTVs, boats, a rescue unit, and dedicated wildfire command vehicles, reflecting a strong wildland and water-rescue capability alongside structural firefighting.
ESD No. 2 recruits both volunteer firefighters/support members and career firefighters. Volunteers submit a paper application in person at Station 4 or by email after completing required prerequisite training; career firefighter openings are applied for through an online JotForm application.
