Department careers page ↗Bryan Fire Department traces its origins to July 5, 1871, when it was founded as Hook and Ladder Company No. 1. The department reorganized a decade later as Protection Engine Company No. 1 and purchased a steam fire engine described as the first piece of American LaFrance apparatus to arrive in Texas. Motorized apparatus followed in 1914, and the department hired its first full-time employee in 1921.
Today the department operates five fire stations staffed by more than 154 full-time firefighters and staff, organized into A, B, and C shifts under three Battalion Chiefs. In addition to fire suppression and emergency medical services, crews maintain specialized capabilities in building collapse, confined space, high-angle, lost person/wilderness search, trench, and water rescue.
Beyond emergency response, the department runs public education efforts including school visits, workplace training, senior safety programs, and a Citizen Fire Academy, and its Fire Marshal's Office handles fire alarm and sprinkler system permitting and inspections.
Bryan Fire Department periodically recruits Certified Firefighters (FF/EMT or FF/Paramedic) through a City of Bryan HR process involving a written exam and physical fitness assessment.
