About Corpus Christi Fire Department

The Corpus Christi Fire Department is the municipal fire and EMS agency serving the city of Corpus Christi on the Texas Gulf Coast. It operates 18 fire stations across the city and neighboring Port Aransas, along with a headquarters, a warehouse, and a training dome.

The department is a full-service organization handling fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, fire prevention and code enforcement, public education, and emergency management. Its coastal setting is reflected in a fleet that includes boat units at multiple stations and brush units for wildland-type incidents.

Engine companies staff most stations, with ladder trucks, a rescue unit, a HazMat unit, and specialized apparatus such as Light & Air and UTV units distributed across the system. Each apparatus is ideally staffed with a captain, a driver, and two firefighters.

MissionThe Fire Department functions to protect life, property, and the assets of the City from any emergency situation through preparedness, prevention, public education, the development and enforcement of fire codes, emergency medical services, fire suppression, and hazardous material incident response.

How to get hired

Firefighter Trainee candidates apply online through the city's job portal (cctexasjobs.com) and must clear a sequential, multi-stage process: a written examination, the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), a background investigation, an oral board interview, a psychological examination, and pre-employment medical and drug testing, with a possible polygraph. Honorably discharged veterans with at least 180 days of active duty can add five points to a passing test score.

Successful candidates enter a training academy that may run up to 20 months covering fire and EMS subjects, working Monday through Friday during training before moving to the department's 24-hours-on, 48-hours-off shift schedule after graduation. Candidates must live close enough to reach City Hall within 60 minutes by car.

PayStarting salary is listed on the city's Wages and Benefits page; a specific amount is not stated on the recruitment page.
