Department careers page ↗Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department traces its roots to April 3, 1951, when local residents formally incorporated a volunteer fire company to protect the growing community, moving up from farmers using pressurized fig sprayers to fight grass fires. The department grew alongside the city over the following decades, adding its first dedicated fire station in 1975, launching an ambulance service in 1973, and expanding to four stations as Friendswood annexed neighboring areas like Forest Bend.
Today FVFD operates as a non-profit under a services contract with the City of Friendswood: the department supplies personnel, apparatus maintenance, and public education, while the city funds operations, capital purchases, and station facilities. A ten-member volunteer executive board oversees the fire and EMS divisions, and the department reports through the Fire Marshal's Office while coordinating routinely with city police, dispatch, and public works.
FVFD blends a large volunteer roster with full-time and part-time paid staff to cover a roughly 21-square-mile response area, running an ambulance-based EMS program alongside structural firefighting, water rescue, and mutual aid with neighboring departments such as Pearland, League City, and Alvin.
MissionIt is the mission of the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department to: Provide efficient and effective emergency fire & rescue services; Provide efficient and effective advanced emergency medical care; Provide education in all areas of life safety including but not limited to fire prevention, injury prevention, child safety & CPR training.
