Department careers page ↗The Harlingen Fire Department traces its roots to a volunteer bucket brigade organized in 1912, shortly after the city installed its first hydrants and water system. The department reorganized in 1922 under first chief Bert Gamble, became a paid municipal force in 1926, and expanded through the mid-20th century as Harlingen grew, adding stations across the city through the 1950s.
Today HFD operates from eight fire stations covering roughly 60 square miles that include Harlingen, Combes, Palm Valley, and unincorporated areas of Cameron County. The department is organized into an Operations Division that handles emergency response across A, B, and C shifts, a Fire Prevention Bureau that enforces the International Fire Code and analyzes risk through NFIRS data, a Training Division, and an Office of Emergency Management that has coordinated citywide disaster planning since 1995. Crews respond to structure fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and aircraft rescue firefighting calls, reflecting the city's proximity to Valley International Airport.
