About Nacogdoches Fire Department

Nacogdoches Fire Department traces its roots to 1907, when citizens first organized a volunteer fire company that briefly disbanded before being reorganized as the Nacogdoches Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 on February 29, 1908, under Chief Ira Link Sturdevant. The department's first motorized fire engine, a 1923 Seagrave nicknamed "Big Bertha," arrived by train in 1924, marking the shift away from horse-drawn and hand-pulled equipment. The Central Fire Station has occupied the same block on the south side of the historic town square since a city hall/fire station combination was built there in 1909, later replaced by a larger municipal building in 1952.

Today the department is a full-service public safety agency covering the city with five stations, five engines, a 100-foot aerial tower, a medium-duty heavy rescue, three wildland engines, and a rehab unit, maintaining more than 1,500 fire hydrants citywide. Beyond suppression, crews handle EMS response, hazardous materials incidents, technical and water rescue, fire and life-safety inspections, and public education, including a Citizens Fire Academy and an on-site fire museum at Central Station.

How to get hired

The department now accepts applicants who are not yet fire certified. Candidates selected as Firefighter Cadets have their Fire Academy and/or EMS coursework paid for by the department in exchange for a required post-training service commitment. Fully certified applicants receive priority consideration in hiring. Open positions are posted through the City of Nacogdoches' ApplicantPro job portal.

Non-certified hires are brought on as Firefighter Cadets with department-paid Fire Academy and/or EMS training, followed by a required service commitment to repay training costs.
