Department careers page ↗Danville Fire Department has protected the city of Danville, Virginia since it was organized on January 1, 1884, under Fire Chief C. S. Bennett — a start that consisted of a single station, one horse-drawn engine, and four horses. More than 140 years later, the department has grown into a full-service career fire and rescue agency covering 43.7 square miles of the city, operating out of seven fire stations and working jointly with neighboring Pittsylvania County on regional response.
Today's roster of roughly 145 professional firefighters runs engines, ladder and tower trucks, tenders, brush apparatus, a tactical rescue trailer, and a hazardous-materials response trailer out of stations spread across the city, backed by the joint Danville & Pittsylvania County Regional Training Center on Stinson Drive. New hires are not required to arrive certified, but must complete Firefighter I, EVOC, and EMT certification within 18 months of employment, reflecting a department that builds much of its own training in-house.
Danville Fire Department is led by Fire Chief David Coffey alongside Deputy Chiefs Brandyn Smith and Ryan Campbell, and hiring runs through the City of Danville's Human Resources Department whenever the department is actively recruiting.
