Department careers page ↗The Spokane Fire Department protects Washington's second-largest city from 16 fire stations, fielding a force of over 350 firefighters who respond to roughly 52,000 calls for service each year.
The Operations Division is organized into four platoons within two battalions, working alternating 24-hour shifts. Beyond standard fire and EMS response, the department maintains substantial specialty capacity: 213 EMTs and 79 paramedics, 52 hazardous-materials technicians and specialists, 40 water rescue technicians, and 48 rescue technician firefighters.
The department also runs a community-oriented C.A.R.E.S. program and emphasizes prevention, training, and public education alongside emergency response.
Uniformed firefighter hiring for the City of Spokane runs through the Civil Service Commission, with a dedicated recruitment site at joinspokanefire.org. Candidates apply through the City's posting on governmentjobs.com, then complete an in-person written Civil Service exam and a CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) from an IAFF-accredited provider.
Because hiring is civil-service based, the department opens application windows periodically rather than continuously. Prospective firefighters are encouraged to sign up for job notifications so they can apply the next time a window opens. Non-uniformed roles are posted through the City of Spokane Career Center.
