The Fire Division sits within JBLM's Directorate of Emergency Services and covers one of the Army's largest joint installations, spanning Lewis Main, Lewis North, Gray Army Airfield, McChord Field and the surrounding housing and medical campuses near Tacoma, Washington. Rather than a single firehouse, the division staffs a network of numbered stations positioned across the installation so crews can reach barracks, airfields, hospitals and family housing areas quickly regardless of where an incident occurs.
Crews are cross-trained to handle structural fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials incidents and fire rescue, and the division backs that response capability with an active fire-prevention program: code enforcement, loss-prevention inspections, and public education. The Fire Prevention Office also runs recurring installation-wide training, certifying newly appointed building managers and evacuation coordinators and authorizing personnel as Permit Authority Individuals for JBLM's hot-work program, work that keeps the base's day-to-day fire risk in check between emergency calls.
Because JBLM houses Army and Air Force units side by side, the Fire Division's mission explicitly extends to every service member, civilian employee and family member living, working or visiting the installation, making it a joint-service department in practice as well as name.
