Department careers page ↗The Monona Fire Department has served the City of Monona since 1954, providing fire suppression and emergency medical services to a community of roughly 7,500 residents packed into about 3.5 square miles landlocked by Madison, Wisconsin.
It is a combination department: a full-time fire chief, nine career firefighter/paramedics, one part-time firefighter/paramedic, and a corps of 32 paid-on-call firefighters. Members are trained to the Firefighter II level.
Despite its small footprint, the department is busy, responding to more than 1,300 ambulance calls and roughly 400 to 500 fire calls each year. Its work centers on EMS transport, fire response, and technical rescue.
MissionTo minimize the risk of death, injury, and property loss from fires, medical emergencies, or natural disasters.
Monona hires both career firefighter/paramedics and paid-on-call firefighters. Paid-on-call recruits must be at least 19, have a desire to serve, a willingness to learn, pass a basic physical exam, and clear background and reference checks; the department provides equipment and training through Monona Fire, Madison College, and specialized organizations.
Career positions are posted through the city's GovernmentJobs portal. Prospective paid-on-call members are encouraged to visit the fire station in person, and training drills are held Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Questions can go to the fire chief at 608-222-2528 or firechief@ci.monona.wi.us.
