Department careers page ↗Sublette County Unified Fire (SCUF) is an all-volunteer fire department that provides structural and wildland fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, fire investigation, and public education services across Sublette County in western Wyoming. The department operates through six geographically distributed battalions -- Pinedale, Big Piney/Marbleton, Bondurant, Boulder, Daniel, and Kendall Valley -- each staffed by local volunteer firefighters and coordinated under a single County Fire Warden/Fire Chief, currently Shad Cooper.
SCUF was formed by consolidating six previously independent county fire departments into one unified organization, a change that dramatically improved the county's Insurance Services Office (ISO) protection classification -- from a Class 6 rating in Pinedale before unification to a Class 3 rating today for properties within five road miles of a municipal water supply, placing the department among the top-rated fire agencies nationally.
In 2024 alone, SCUF's volunteers answered 259 emergency calls, completed 69 firefighter physicals, logged more than 2,200 hours on scene, and delivered 147 training classes covering structural firefighting, hazmat, and NWCG wildland qualifications. Firefighters also deployed 13 times to federal wildland fires and donated more than 1,000 hours to community events, all while earning state-issued Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer, and apparatus operator certifications through the Wyoming State Fire Marshal's Office.
Sublette County Unified Fire recruits volunteer firefighters year-round across its six battalions. Prospective members apply directly to the county fire administration using the Firefighter Application, and accepted volunteers train toward Wyoming State Fire Marshal-issued Firefighter I/II and NWCG wildland qualifications while serving their local battalion.
