Full-Time Firefighter/Paramedic – Emerald Isle Fire Department

The Emerald Isle Fire Department is looking for dedicated and highly motivated individuals to join our team as a Full-Time Firefighter/Medic. This is an excellent opportunity to serve and protect the Emerald Isle community while working alongside a committed group of professionals.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, this position performs general technical protective service work in the field of emergency medical services. Reports to a Company Officer assigned to the station.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May assist and serve as the Officer-in-Charge at an incident scene; performs command duties to include overseeing and directing work of others at an incident; provides emergency response, basic life support and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue; provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; assesses patients to determine the extent of their condition, and renders immediate, appropriate treatment to include but not limited to emergency invasive procedures; and transports patients to appropriate medical facilities. Provides general mentoring through the preceptor program.
  • Provides fire prevention, rescue, ocean rescue, fire suppression, and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue; assists in performing rescues from hazardous sites such as auto accidents and collapsed buildings; and operates fire apparatus and equipment. Identifies fire code violations and takes appropriate measures; and performs pre-incident surveys.
  • Performs routine clerical and administrative functions such as preparing reports and completing forms; performs work using computers and appropriate approved software; conducts training sessions for other firefighters and the public; develops training programs and aids. Performs housekeeping duties at assigned station; performs inspections, maintenance and minor repairs on apparatus and equipment for both firefighting and emergency medical services. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Employees work on a 48 hour shift and participate as part of a team in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, and apparatus.
  • The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters.  The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.  Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.

  • Fire Suppression - Thorough knowledge of practices pertaining to fire suppression to include safety and infection control procedures pertaining to the use and operation of fire apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective gear. Thorough knowledge of the proper use and basic maintenance of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Thorough knowledge of incident command procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and basic maintenance needs including fire engine, aerial, and medical apparatus.
  • Emergency Medical Services - Thorough knowledge of advanced emergency medical care.
  • Safety/Security - Thorough knowledge of safety rules, regulations, procedures and practices as outlined in department directives as they relate to apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective gear. Maintains situational awareness.
  • Customer Service - Comprehensive knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Interpersonal Relationships - Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit.
  • Critical Thinking - Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Judgment/Decision Making - Anticipates, identifies and evaluates potentially dangerous, unusual or deviating situations and exercises appropriate judgment to establish priorities and take prompt action for problem resolution.
  • Communication - Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs and the use of radio communications including appropriate channels and basic radio communications codes. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
  • Geography – Ability to read maps, basic plans and diagrams such as evacuation or building floor plans.

Education and Experience:

Requires a minimum of a High School or General Education Diploma (GED) with 1-2 years of related work experience to include one (1) year of experience in the provision of emergency medical care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders.
  • Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, crawling, and the lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid class C North Carolina driver's license.

Possession of NC Firefighter I/ II certification within twelve months.

Possession of NC or equivalent Paramedic certification.

Possession of Hazardous Materials Operations level within twelve months.

Possession of ACLS, PHTLS, PALS certification

Ability to obtain NC Fire Inspector I within 24 months
