Under general supervision, the Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic provides emergency medical assistance and fights fires within the City.
FIREFIGHTING
- Responds to fire calls; controls, confines and extinguishes fires
- Controls the release of hazardous materials
- Performs specialized treatment of hazardous materials as member of hazardous materials team
- Cleans, sorts and examines debris of fire sights
- Participates in firefighting training sessions
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT
- Responds to calls for emergency medical assistance
- Assesses medical condition of patients and provides emergency medical treatment
- Monitors EKG and vital signs
- Administers medication
- Performs cardiac defibrillation
- Applies splints
- Carries patients up and down stairs and across uneven ground
- Transports individuals to hospital in ambulance
- Takes blood pressure and heart rate for citizens, as required
- Ensures rescue squads and equipment are inspected daily
MAINTENANCE
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs on fire equipment and vehicles:
- Checks fluid levels
- Tightens bolts
- Lubricates fittings
- Washes and cleans equipment
- Changes oil and filters
- Repairs and replaces tires
- Monitors the performance of fire equipment
- Recommends purchase of equipment including:
- Equipment replacement
- Equipment repair
- New and /or improved equipment
MISCELLANEOUS AND SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS
- Attends meeting and serves on temporary committees, as requested
- Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions
- Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested
